The DiMartino Surname

Posted on March 10, 2023April 22, 2023 by admin

When the name is spelled as one word – Dimartino – as it is on the passenger lists when my ancestors came to the United States, it is quite common in the Ragusa region of Sicily, particularly in Santa Croce Camerina. When it is spelled as two words – Di Martino or De Martino is is almost always occurs on the Italian mainland, particularly in Northern Italy.

The oldest record for Dimartino on the Ragusa region is the marriage of Pietro Dimartino to Maria Gurrieri on September 29, 1697. We even have the names of their parents but not the dates of their birth or death. There are no records connecting this couple with the Dimartinos who are our ancestors, but it is likely they were either directly or indirectly related to us.
